Church Custom Facebook Pages Policies
As Facebook Page managers or administrators, we comCe across from time to time scenarios that can put us in a tight spot. I'm referring to blocking some fans/followers from your church Facebook.
At this moment, let's have a look at some reasons why you should block some people from your Page. People who are obnoxious, aggressive, arrogant, or just plain annoying are the ones who are most typically being banned by Facebook Page admins or any Facebook user for that matter. (In some cases that could be half the Church!) Other serious factors are the so-called bullies and stalkers.
Most of the time, your Church's Facebook Page Fans are actually people you know or have a connection with (like a friend of a fan or a mutual friend). There is a big difference between blocking a person who is a stranger to you and having to block a person who is also a member of your church, Am I correct on that? This is acceptable because there is a certain amount of "personal connection" that causes concern to the would-be blocked user.
On a personal note, I maintain that a custom facebook page should have regulations. Its owners, administrators and members are bound by rules on good conduct, etiquette and correct decorum, to say the least. To be honest, I was not aware of this issue until I heard a fellow Page admin complaining about certain fans' preposterous comments or posts that he had to manually delete every time. Seeing the hassle of persistently monitoring a Church Fan Page for inappropriate comments, I suggested the we have to be equally diligent in reminding Fans and Followers to read and observe our posting rules thinking this might help dissuade unruly fans from posting foul comments or messages.
What if these subtle simple guidelines do not succeed? I believe that after several attempts to call a person's attention and he still showed no change in behavior, that warrants a more drastic solution which is to block him. As the one in-charge, it is your accountability to create a like page on facebook. Just think about how these commentary would affect your other fans (especially if there are youth members) and how one person's statement can totally wreck a lively discussion. Your fans should have to have a feeling of being in a healthy, comfortable and safe zone in your Fan Page.
I also believe that the "blocking" feature of Facebook should only be implemented as an ultimate solution, Once you think that you have done all the possible strategies to aid the person involved. And if you unfortunately have to come to that level, don't feel bad about it. Though it is your Church's representation online, still it is a separate entity from the actual church. This does not in any way prevent blocked fans from physically attending and participating in its services and activities. Who knows, this might work as a heads-up for that person to change his ways.
