A short history of Joomla
Joomla is a content management system that permits internet site owners and/or internet site developers to create and run a site without the usage of any special software. The "core" of Joomla is written in the PHP language and is opensource, implying that anybody can use and tweak the code as they want. The Joomla project started in controversy. Another CMS, called Mambo, began to gain traction in the web development community. However on August 17, 2005, plenty of the developers left that project and started a "fork" which was pretty much the same software under a new name. This was altered to mend some problems and the first version of Joomla was born on Sep 16, 2005. The name comes from the Swahili word jumla, which means "all together" or "as a whole".
New versions have continued to be released with more new and exciting features. Joomla 1.5 was released on January 22, 2008. It contained major enhancements both in features and performance. The take-up of this variation was superb with millions of downloads.
The next major version to be released was 1.6 on January 10, 2011. This release also introduced many new features, but the main ones were the much anticipated nested categories and access control list. This release also saw the start of a new release schedule. Joomla would now be updated every half year.
In line with the new release schedule, Joomla 1.7 was released on July 19, 2011. The following version will be 2.5 and is due in January 2012.
The future of Joomla is awfully bright indeed. It's now used to power millions of internet sites and the current estimate is that 2.7% of the web uses Joomla.
